Fictional Character - Charlie Grimes

One of my favorite stories of all time is that of "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty." This particular short story centers around a man who escapes the tedious reality of his life through his own day dreams of confidence, heroism, and adventure. I have always been so fascinated with the portrayal of Walter Mitty in the story, and have always loved the way reality and dreams are seamlessly blended together in the writing.

Now, I would not like to have the uninteresting "real" life of Walter Mitty, but rather I would love to be my own version of Walter Mitty, able to escape the dull monotonies of my life through adventurous, breath-taking dreams that seem to be reality to me. I often find myself unhappy with the monotony of life, and I believe the ability have such elaborate and fulfilling dreams like Mitty would be the ultimate cure. Although I was somewhat disappointed with the turnout of the movie (directed by Ben Stiller), the initial magic of reading the short story will never die in my brain. The mental images of Walter amongst a ship crew before an impending hurricane, or facing a firing squad with a confident demeanor cannot be erased from my mind. All I can say is: thank you, James Thurber.
