I would like to start this blog off by saying that I am a huge music fan. From classic rock to alternative to rap, I am always seeking out new music to enjoy and share with others. But despite having a large palette of musical interests, there are always a few songs that never fail to simply make me happy and wish that I was listening to them for the first time again. So here it is: my list of songs that bring great joy to me every time I listen to them and make me think about the good side of life.
1.) All My Friends - LCD Soundsystem
One of my all-time favorite bands and songs. LCD Soundsystem, a dance/electronic/rock group produces a song about growing older and longing to stay in touch with the feelings and friends of their youth. While the subject matter is somewhat saddening when put into a broad persepctive, this song is almost impossible not to move around to, and it continually makes me appreciate and want to go have fun with my friends while I am still young.
2.) Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) - Arcade Fire
This epic opener to one of my favorite alternative rock albums ever (Funeral) tells the story of two kids who liberate themselves from the confines of their suburban lives and experience true life. The instrumentals and lyrics are amazing and emotional, and this song leaves me wanting to express my happiness by any means possible.
3.) Float On - Modest Mouse
First heard this wayyyy back in the day when Pandora was still rockin' and rollin'. As you can maybe gather from the song title, this song expresses a great deal of optimism and comfort with the challenges of day-to-day life. For an alternative rock band like Modest Mouse, who was known for their skepticism and cynicism of many parts of life, this song was a massive change of pace, and it paid off massively. It became a massive hit, and its beat and lyrics and irresistably good and happy.
4.) Hol' Up - Kendrick Lamar
Undoubtedly my favorite rap artist, I believe Kendrick Lamar has completely changed the dynamic of modern rap, tackling pressing social issues and refusing to silenced. Despite this, Kendrick has still thrown in some songs here and there where he is really just having fun and playing around. The blasting horns, awesome beat, and fun (but quite explicit!!) lyrics on this song make it hard for me not to smile.
5.) I'll Fly Away - Kanye West
Don't ask me about this one... This is a 1 minute and 10 second interlude to Kanye West's highly acclaimed "The College Dropout." It is a rendition of the classic "I'll Fly Away" with vocals not even from Kanye, but a soulful male choir that I find not only catchy but somewhat humorous. I find it funny that this was included on a rap album, but I also think it is very well done and very enjoyable to listen to as a transitional (and stand-alone) song.
