On October 2, 1967, Thurgood Marshall was sworn into office as the first African American US Supreme Court justice. This event was incredible, as it showed major progress in eliminating segregation and racism. It placed an African American in an extremely important leadership position in our country, and was therefore a huge step taken in the right direction- away from racism. Now, we have progressed even further, as we inaugurated our first African American president of the United States in 2008. This event had a major impact on our country because it demonstrated positive progress in an issue we are still experiencing today.
I strongly appreciate this event. I believe that equality is necessary to run a successful society, and until people of all race, religion, gender, and sexual orientation lead together, we will not succeed as a nation. I want the United States to be an effective nation, but until everyone is equal, that will not happen. That is why this event that took place 47 years ago is still regarded as impactful and is still appreciated by many, including me, today.
