Sam Vandiver- Assignment 6: Choose Your Own Adventure

Prompt 1: How do the settings and monsters of horror movies reflect upon society's fears as a whole?

Prompt 2: Why does Aquaman seem to get no respect? Do you think this is warranted? Why/why not?

Prompt 3: Despite (arguably) being the most technically challenging and intriguing genre of music, heavy metal is still often misunderstood and disliked. Why is this? What are your opinions on the type of music?

Prompt 3 Response: Heavy metal is a genre of music that was born out of alienation. Many musicians that play metal have stated that they were awkward or different in high school and I believe that this is still a stereotype that is applied to people who play or listen to metal.
A lot of people don't like that they cannot understand what the lyrics are, but this is the same for many classical pieces. It is also worth mentioning that both genres have songs that do not feature any words. Many progressive metal songs also include clear vocals in addition to the metal growl.
Personally, I find symphonic death metal in particular to be very relaxing. It features the general dual fast guitars and blast beat drumming, but also incorporates full orchestras. When the two seemingly contrasting elements fit together expertly, it feels incredibly whole and I believe it to be soothing.
