A World in Pictures

Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast of the Unites States early in the morning on August 29, 2005. The storm itself was bad, but the aftermath was absolutely catastrophic. There was massive flooding after because of the levees. Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced from their homes. 1,833 died in the hurricane and subsequent floods.
This picture shows survivors of the flood despairing at their loss. Their closed up posture shows their grief as they stand in front of a ravaged home with debris everywhere. They probably didn't expect all of this the day before. In an instant, they lost their homes, all they own, and maybe even people they loved.
This is just one picture of two people out of the 15 million people affected by Hurricane Katrina. Outside of this picture, there are millions of people devastated, wondering about what they would have to do next. Some would have to move out to someplace new and start from scratch. The events shocked those around the U.S. and changed the lives of the community of the affected people.
