Come to the dark side, Luke

What is good?  How do we truly know what is right? It seems that morals always better other peoples' lives.  We think it is morally wrong not to kill someone.  That helps the targeted person.  We think it is morally wrong to take money that is just sitting on the street, and some people even go out of their way to return the money to its original owner.  That betters the owner's life.  Why can't something that benefits my life be morally right?
What is evil?  How do we truly know what is wrong?  Is revenge wrong?  It seems to have been deemed wrong by our society.  If a man killed my family, and I went out and killed him I would be thrown in jail.  Doing something that would better my life would land me in jail.  That seems wrong to me.  Society has defined what good and evil are, which means when society as a whole changes what we view to be right or wrong the applications could be completely different  from what they are now.  There is no finite meaning of good and evil, thus; I do not believe that they are absolute.  I believe there is a gray area.
