Early 2013, the terrible tragedy of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting took place. Adam Lanza was the identified shooter. What hate, anger, sorrow, and grievance the whole country felt following the aftermath. Confusion and curiosity rushed through the minds of the American people. How and why did this happen? A strongly vocal and opinionated Christian group believed they had the answer.
Whatever conspiracy or cover-up theory you may believe in should be put aside for now, and all readers should have the mindset at this time to recognize the shooting as an unfortunate tragedy. That being said, why would someone go through with this? How could one, Adam Lanza, willingly and mercilessly go into an elementary school and single-handily murder all of these children? The Westboro Baptist Church thinks it all leads back to one of their primary "issues" with our country: the acceptance of gays and lesbians in our country.
The congregation is convinced that this tragedy was no accident, and it was carried out through the hands of God himself, as a punishment for accepting this "deadly sin" into our culture.
Imagine being the parent of one of the victims. Finding it impossible to perceive the rest of your life, having to bear the burden of your lost child till death. Wanting only compassion and support for your loss. And you see the sign above. Telling you that it is YOUR fault this happened. You are to blame, as an American, for accepting homosexuals. God is punishing you because you have "disobeyed" him.
Believe what you want. Preach what you want. No one can view this type of protesting as humane, though. Because it is just the opposite.
