Come to the dark side, Luke

Good and evil are completely subjective terms. We all have our own personal morals, and we base our definitions of good and evil around those morals. We each believe there is a clear cut definition of these terms because we assume everyone else is following the same set of guidelines we are. In reality, people just try to live by their principles while everyone else judges them to justify their own personal principles.

By trying to define the terms “good” and “evil,” we have created an environment where it is easy to judge everyone else on the simplest of actions. It is impossible to distinguish between the true good and evil because it does not exist. There is no truth to any good or evil. It is only our perception of the world and how we each decide to conduct ourselves morally.

One could say that there must be good and evil because we know that both positive and negative things occur in the world. The only problem is, these “positive” occurrences are just things that the majority of people agree happened because of “good” intentions. The negative occurrences are things that the majority of people agree happened because of “evil” intentions.

But Hitler didn’t see the genocide he inspired and conducted as “evil.” He saw it as purification. A thief may not see his actions as taking from others, but rather of providing for him/herself and his/her family. It is all about perception. We don’t know the extensive details of every person’s set of moral guidelines, so we can only live by our own and accept that there will always be both “good” and “evil” in the world.
