Iwrite

Iwrite-Rena Childers

I enjoy social media and the ability to instantaneously correspond with my friends just as much as the next person, but I think as a society, technology has lessened our quality of life. Although it has provided us with easier access to information (primarily through Google), technology has severely hindered our ability to interact with others. We rely on text messages and phone calls to communicate the “risky” things we want/need to, rather than speaking them in person, because it’s much easier. Twenty years ago, this was not a problem. For example, dating was made much simpler and more romantic then. People sent thought-out letters instead of short, unimaginative text messages. They knew how to make conversation in person because that was the only way to get to know each other. Granted, there were still phones, but most families only had landlines, and you can’t exactly text on a landline. Although I enjoy living in the current decade, I think it would be more freeing to live 20 years ago. In fact, if I could choose, I would choose to grow up in the 1950’s or ‘60’s. As a whole, I believe technology has degraded our quality of life.
