Two major trends in technology that will affect the world in years to come are 3D printing and wearable technology (also I think virtual reality is awesome so I might talk about that too (even though it's impact might be lesser. Actually no it can have a pretty big impact too) ). Pardon my parentheception. 3D printing is a revolutionary technology because it is evolving both as a consumer product and an industrial product. As 3D printers become more affordable and more compact they, increase in popularity and allow the masses to customize virtually anything. On the other side of the coin, less user-friendly and also more costly printers are being developed to print airplane parts, organs, and even a more humane version of a burger that's still real meat.
Wearable technology is becoming increasingly popular because we are addicted to our smartphones, so any easier way to access them sounds great. But this isn't the only reason why wearable technology is important. Products that seamlessly merge humans and technology will, in the future, allow us to have direct access to unlimited information while still concentrating on whatever task is at hand, and allow us to accomplish tasks with our bodies that we couldn't do before. These inventions will allow us to improve ourselves and achieve greater things, but I am not suggesting that those with this technology should call themselves a "superior race" and try and take over the world.
Finally, the evolution of virtual reality will eventually allow us to explore the world without moving an inch. I'm not saying it's going to be the same as the real thing, but it could allow us to try out things that aren't possible in real life (for example letting you become a bird or letting a bird become a human). The crazy thing about this technology is that it's already here (at least in it's early iterations): one man already had an existential crisis from a VR room that was so realistic it caused him to doubt whether he was still in the room or not. And that makes me so happy.
This is obviously the future.
