Technology, although sometimes a wonderful thing (especially for school- I don’t know what I would do without google), can be very harmful to our society. Though I can think of many times when I was able to work more efficiently because of google or the internet, I can also remember many times that I was unable to work at all because my computer crashed. When it works, it is fantastic, but when it crashes, we are left stuck and unable to complete our work. We are so reliant on technology nowadays, that when it breaks, we don’t know how to handle it. Technology has allowed much better access to information, but it has also left people unable to handle difficult situations when they don’t have their smartphones. This is one way it has negatively impacted me personally.
But I have also seen the effects of technology on society as a whole, particularly kids. I have three younger cousins who demonstrate perfectly how harmful technology can be. They live just outside Chicago, so I don’t get to see them very often. When I do, however, it is obvious just how devoted they are to their technology. Every morning, as soon as they wake up, they are immediately begging to play angry birds or watch youtube on their parents iPad. They play on the iPad for a lot of the day, and it is sad to me. They are 4, 5, and 7 years old. They should be playing outside or doing other fun things that don’t involve staring at a tiny screen for several hours. I believe that this is one way that technology has had a harmful impact on today’s society- it has caused kids to miss out on fun childhood experiences because their eyes are already glued to the computer at age three.
