Changes - Weiran Liu

Our education system is the basis to producing the future workforce. It is fundamental in a country that has a great population to educate a large mass with the most ease and lowest cost – thus was born the public education system. Nationwide children are granted with never before seen opportunities. Once in the system, children are taught to compete with one another through obtaining good grades. Habits and thoughts are molded to societal standards of what is important to focus on.

Furthermore are demands put on students to succeed with a full course load while participating in a multitude of extracurricular activities that solely enhance one’s potential for acceptance into higher education. Compensation for this includes lack of sleep, socialization and pursuit of personal interests, but the valuable skill of time management is acquired.

Goal orientated students learn to dispense trivial fascinations for the sake of success. Courses that focus on science, literature, and mathematics are prioritized over arts and music. This way they don’t waste time on classes that colleges do not care. After all, who needs passion when you can mass produce a monotonous working population?
