The family of Thomas Eric Duncan, a Liberian national who died of Ebola at a
Texas hospital, reached a confidential settlement with Texas Health Resources.
This was interesting to me because it appeared that the hospital accepted
responsibility for the death of Mr. Duncan. He was diagnosed with the deadly
disease in September when he traveled to Texas from Liberia. Although, he was
initially misdiagnosed he was hospitalized days later. I thought about the
times when I was sick and told that I did not have any infections, but my
parents took me back and they found strep throat or an ear infection. It seemed
that although I was experiencing symptoms, I did not present any symptoms at
the time I went. But, I was treated when the symptoms became evident. I wonder
if the media attention given to this disease was the reason for accepting
responsibility and settling with the family. I do not think they did anything
wrong. And it was not done intentionally.
