Assignment 13
In Kentucky, we have a major problem with the use and trafficking of methamphetamine. In order to truly turn the tide in the war against this notorious drug, we need to completely change our approach to this issue. Many users of this hardcore drug often began their bad habits with other drugs such as marijuana. The negative stigma that users of any illegal drug receive is often a motivating factor to these people. They feel rebellious and get a sense of gratification in doing something that they are prohibited from doing, so by legalizing these drugs, we can eliminate this motivation. In legalizing marijuana in Colorado, Illegal trafficking and use in the state has decreased significantly. In Kentucky, the meth problem could be simply eradicated by its legalization. Without the adrenaline-pumping fear of being penalized, what legitimate reason would a person have to manufacture or use such a harmful drug? Why would a man who is down on his luck and has nothing to lose want to make a fortune if he doesn't get the fun of disobeying authority and sticking it to the man? By answering these questions one can see how much of a motive the illegality of meth is to the many involved in its traffic and use. By understanding their motives, we can truly get to the root of this problem. In fact, what business does the government have in protecting its citizens? The outdated words of the Constitution claim that it should "promote the general welfare", but this document could never have predicted the vast drug abuse issues we suffer from now. In imprisoning dealers and users, and therefore preventing the furtherance of methamphetamine's use, the government is keeping them from their loving families and healthy drug-free friends. By legalizing methamphetamine in Kentucky, our government will prevent thousands from being sucked into the horrific vacuum that is drug abuse and cast off the false authority of an archaic document. Trust me on this one, I know what I'm talking about.
